Miangas Island

Miangas is Indonesia's outer islands are located near the border between Indonesia and the Philippines. The island is included in the Miangas village, subdistrict Nanusa, Talaud Islands, North Sulawesi province, Indonesia. Miangas is one of the islands belonging to the cluster of islands bordering Nanusa directly with the Philippines.

This island is one of Indonesia's outer islands so vulnerable border issues, terrorism and smuggling. The island has an area of about 3.15 km ². Distance Miangas Island with Sub Nanusa is about 145 miles, while the distance to the Philippines is only 48 miles. Miangas Island has a population of 678 inhabitants (2003) with the majority of the tribe Talaud. Marriage to citizens of the Philippines was inevitable due to the proximity to the Philippines. In fact, some reports say the currency used on this island is the peso.

Dutch controlled the island since 1677. Philippines since 1891 to enter into the territory Miangas. Miangas known by the name of La Palmas in the Philippine map. Dutch then react by asking the problem Miangas to the International Arbitration Court.
